No one has won the Guardiola-Xavi mentor-disciple battle

Both have a good match.  They love their team to play attacking football.  Tends to play with the ball in possession.  Both prefer the 4-3-3 formation.  Can bring out the best in players.

The playing style of the two was almost the same in their playing career.  Later they played together in the Barça jersey since 1998, even though they were mentors and disciples.  It is being said, about Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez.  When you hear the two names Guardiola and Xavi, the image of the golden period in Barca from 2008 to 2012 floats before your eyes.  At the time Guardiola's coaching reached another level Barca.

Those days are now past.  Xavi is now Barca's coach.  Guardiola is in charge of Manchester City.  The two guru-disciples met in the dugout for the first time in a friendly last night.  Former Barcelona goalkeeper and coach Juan Carlos Unjué was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2020.  Guardiola and Xavi faced City-Barca in front of 91,000 spectators at the Camp Nou to pay tribute to him and raise funds for research into the disease.  After the final whistle, it appeared that no one could win.  The match was drawn 3-3.

Argentinian winger Julian Alvarez put City ahead with a goal in the 21st minute.  But goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before the first half and Frenkie de Jong after the break put Barca ahead in the match.  In the 70th minute, Barca's 20-year-old midfielder Cole Palmer scored a goal for City to equalize again (2-2).  But Memphis Depay put Barca ahead again in the 79th minute - this time the Catalan club asked the Dutch striker to find a new club before the end of the transfer season.

However, the drama in the match was not over yet.  City were awarded a penalty 9 minutes into added time.  City striker Arling Holland fell in Barca's box.  But whether it was a penalty or not can be argued.  Even Holland's eyes and face were saying that he did not expect to get a penalty.  Riyad Mahrez scored from a spot kick to equalize City 3-3.

Carlos Unjue played with Guardiola at Barca from 1988 to 1990.  He was later a member of Barça's coaching staff from 2008 to 2010, when the club was coached by Guardiola.  Unjue was also there during Barca's 'trimukout' win in 2009, when the club was coached by Guardiola and held in midfield by Xavi.  He returned to Barca's coaching staff in 2014.  Then coach Luis Enrique.

Unjue became emotional during his opening speech before the match began.  He went to the field and kicked the ball sitting in a wheelchair and started the official match.  City have tested several young players in this match.  Guardiola played Cole Palmer, Rico Lewis, Sergio Gomez.
