It's been two and a half years since the death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant. His fans are yet to get over the grief of that horrific helicopter crash. But the grief of Bryant's wife Vanessa Bryant is more. He had to run to the court with this grief.
After the accident on January 26, 2020, the Los Angeles police took all the gruesome pictures after arriving at the scene. Four assistants of the county sheriff (police chief) there also published the pictures on social media. It was also reported that Vanessa Bryant filed a lawsuit in March last year.
News agency AFP reported that Los Angeles County authorities were fined heavily in that case yesterday in favor of the plaintiff. The jury ordered the Los Angeles County authorities to pay $3.1 million (about Tk 292 crore in Bangladeshi currency) as compensation.
Los Angeles police and firefighters rushed to the crash site in Calabasas, California after the crash. Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, preceded him in death. The police personnel took pictures of their dismembered bodies. At the hearing of this case in Los Angeles, the plaintiff's lawyer said that after the photos were taken, they were released to the general public. A police deputy also sent some pictures to his friend's cell phone.
In addition to Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, 7 other people were killed in the accident. Along with Vanessa, another plaintiff in this case, Chris Chester, also lost his wife and daughter in the accident.
Vanessa Bryant and Chris Chester filed a lawsuit alleging emotional damages after the photos were released. They feared that the gruesome pictures would slowly spread on the Internet.
After the hearing, the civil jury ordered the Los Angeles County authorities to pay $1.6 million (about 151 million Bangladeshi rupees) to Vanessa Bryant and $1.5 million (about 141 million Bangladeshi rupees) to Chester. The money is sought to compensate the Bryant and Chester families for the emotional trauma they went through after the photos were taken, and for future problems with the photos.
Kobe Bryant's wife cried when the verdict was announced. Later, Vanessa posted a photo of Kobe Bryant and her daughter on her Instagram account and wrote, 'Everything is for you! Love you! Justice for Kobe and Gigi.'
